Excitement in my neighborhood

A prison inmate who went to great lengths to carry out a whimsical escape plan ultimately failed when he was caught Friday night hiding in a portable toilet in Rockdale.
Cesar Sanchez, 37, escaped from a moving Illinois Department of Corrections van in Lockport several hours earlier, made his way to a grocery store despite limping and being handcuffed, then stowed himself away on the top of a semi truck’s cab and hitched a ride to Rockdale before going into hiding.
Sanchez was being taken from the Bridgeview courthouse to Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill when he kicked the door of a DOC van open and hopped out near 159th Street and Farrell Road in Lockport about 2:15 p.m., officials said.
About six hours later, police dogs from the Joliet Police Department and Cook County sheriff’s police tracked Sanchez to a portable toilet in the yard of the Waste Management Depot in the 1800 block of Moen Avenue in Rockdale.

The area where he escaped from the van is a few miles from my house and about half a mile from the high school.

I am soooo releived that he was captured.

Happy December

November has been such a crazy month at work. Since it is nearing the end of the year, so many patients want to get in for exams because their insurance deductibles have been met. December will be crazier, but I am going to try my best to post on my blog at least 5 times a week. I am also going to visit my blog and forum friends as often as I can.

Today I made a flower from a tutorial at  Santa's Workshop at The Flying Unicorn Forum.

I hope that you all will stop by The Flying Unicorn and join the festivities.

Stampin' Dymonz ZENTANGLE Challenge

Hello friends!!! I am soooo behind on posting, visiting blogs and sending e-mails. I will be feverishly playing catch-up in the next few weeks.

I missed completing the last several challenges at Stampin' Dymonz Creative Space and I promised to be better about doing her challenges. Challenge #8  Your challenge this week, then, is to create a Zentangle design. Your Zentangle must be an A2 sized card (4.25" X 5.5") on white cardstock and the Zentangle needs to encompass the entire front and back of the card in it's design. The inside should have a half inch border of Zentangle on each of its longest sides. You are allowed a quarter inch border on the front/back if you so wish. All you need is white cardstock and a black Ultra Fine Sharpie Marker.

Well~I have NEVER zentangled, but I am quite pleased with my 1st attempt.

Have a FABULOUS day!!!

HUGS!!!

My Ouchie

For those of you who remeber my pretty cast~ I was in it for three weeks as a last resort to treating my plantar fascitis. It did not work. Plantar fasciitis occurs when the thick band of tissue on the bottom of the foot is overstretched or overused. This can be pain and make walking difficult.

Initial Treatment includes:
•Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) to reduce pain and inflammation
•Heel stretching exercises
•Resting as much as possible for at least a week
•Wearing shoes with good support and cushions
Other steps to relieve pain include:
•Apply ice to the painful area. Do this at least twice a day for 10 - 15 minutes, more often in the first couple of days.
•Try wearing a heel cup, felt pads in the heel area, or shoe inserts.
•Use night splints to stretch the injured fascia and allow it to heal.
If these treatments do not work, your doctor may recommend:
•Custom-made shoe inserts (orthotics)
•Steroid shots or injections into the heel
•Wearing a boot cast, which looks like a ski boot, for 3-6 weeks. It can be removed for bathing.
Wearing a walking cast.

In a few patients, nonsurgical treatment does not work. Surgery to release the tight tissue becomes necessary.
I had my surgery on July 7th.

.

This are not images from my actual surgery, but of the procedure that I had done (In-Step Plantar Fasciotomy)

My postoperative orders.
A walker boot will be used from the day of surgery until 6 weeks post-operative. The walker boot is used for all walking. For the 1st 3weeks, it is used day and night. After 3 weeks (when my stitches are removed), it can be removed for showering.

I will be spending the next few weeks catching up on blogging  :)

HUGS!!

Today our community mourns

With a war that’s lasted longer than any other, the reality is that if you wait long enough, sooner or later the statistics will catch up with you. More than 250 Illinois soldiers have given their lives for our freedom. Now that number has grown by one.

Pfc. Michael Olivieri and four others belonging to the 1st Infantry Division in Fort Riley, Kan., were killed in Baghdad when insurgents launched an attack on their base, division officials said. The soldiers deployed to Iraq in November 2010.

They were part of the 2nd Advise and Assist Brigade, supporting the development of Iraq forces and the improvement of civilian life in central Iraq.

Each of the soldiers had served less than two years and each was on his first deployment.

Homer Glen is a small but close-knit community, where plans are already being made to honor Pfc. Olivieri in the form of a special memorial at the Homer Township Public Library, where his mother Jody works. They are creating a “Heroes” quiet reading room as part of a library expansion to honor the 26-year-old soldier and others in the military.

Olivieri was due home on Monday June 13, which would have been his one-year wedding anniversary with his wife Sharon, and was also due to attend his sister’s wedding on the 25th. All of this makes his death especially hard for his family and friends to take. From all accounts, however, they have been nothing but proud of his service to his country.

Olivieri was a 2002 graduate of nearby Lockport Township High School  and attended Southern Illinois University. He also started and played in a local band called The Moops. His friends called him, “The glue that held us together.”

Hundreds of mourners of all ages turned out this morning to honor U.S. Army Pfc. Michael C. Olivieri during the soldier’s funeral procession through Homer Glen en route from the Modell Funeral Home to Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

The funeral procession included about 200 vehicles. En route to the cemetery, it passed by crowds of supporters gathered on all four corners at all the major intersections along the route in Homer Glen. Other towns took part in paying tribute, too, with fire departments using their ladder trucks and flags to form arches across the roads.

Blank Canvas

It has been raining the last two days, so I haven't been able to garden. Ordinarily I wouldn't let a little rain stop me~but I am in a cast up to my knee. I partially tore some ligaments  in my foot.
Scary thought~I was thinking about adding some stamping to my cast. I really want to heat emboss on it but I don't want to waste embossing powder.

Tim Times 10~Day 7 Challenge

Today is day 7 of Tim Times Ten Grand Giveaway  Challenge at Stampin Dymonz Creative Space.
Today's challenge is  an acetate tag. The acetate must be dry embossed. It must be inked. Your tag must be two-layered, include an image, and you must use some type of "dimensional" product to embellish your image -- fun flock, flower soft, heat embossing, etc. The weather  is supposed to be cold in Baltimore today; therefore, your tag should depict a cold scene -- could be winter or fall and does not have to include snowmen/snow, just ensure you make a good representation of colder weather. The acetate should be from some packaging that you may have at your craft spot in order that you recycle the plastic and help prevent us from killing our own planet with non-biodegradable materials such as plastic...
My tag did not scan well at all and my son has my camera for the day.
For my acetate tag~ I used recycled clear x-ray film. I dry-embossed it using a cuttlebug folder and sanded the embossed image.I used Staz-On ink at the top, bottom and sides of the acetate tag. I colored the snowman with Bic Markers ans Highlighted some of the words with dimensional paint. I used Paper Studio paper for the 2nd layer.

Steampunk Tag~Stampin Dymonz challenge

I created this tag for "Tim Times Ten~Day 3 challenge at Stampin' Dymonz Creative Space.
The directions were to create a steampunk tag which incorporates the sponging and heat embossing techniques somewhere in the tag. Your design must incorporate a key, 3 arrows, and a pointing hand. At least one of the elements listed must be a metal embellishment and one stamped image must be manually (hand) cut out.

Tag sponged with Studio G orange Chalk Ink and then accented with Tim Holtz Distress Ink (fired brick). My pointed finger brad was colored with alcohol inks (lettuce and currant), covered with clear embossing powder and heat embossed. Two of my ballons were cut from Graphic 45 paper and the 3rd balloon was a Michaels stamp (stamped on Graphic 45 paper) and cut outMy Key (Graphic 45 paper) is on one of the balloons. .Arrows(red~Maya Road)(vellum/one way)(metal~Tim Holtz Game Spinner) Flower paper (Recollections) and brown twine were also used.

Friday, April 29, 2011

It's been quite a while since I've felt any spark of creativity until today.

Too Close to Home

This article appeared in the news today. The article does not mention that there were injuries Derek's 8 month old brother also. I heard about it on Tuesday because  I had worked with the childs paternal grandmother. Derek's parents were amist a divorce due to abusive behavior on her part. Please keep this family in your prayers.

Mother's boyfriend charged in Griffith toddler's death

Prosecutors charged a man with neglect of a dependent Thursday in the death of a 20-month-old Griffith boy.

After telling police his girlfriend's child was injured by falling off a love seat, David Steven Golub, 24, admitted he was actually "twirling the child around very fast by his ankles when the child's head struck the side of the entertainment center," according to a police probable cause affidavit.

Derek Hansen, of the 1000 block of East 35th Avenue, died at 12:10 a.m. Thursday at the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

A preliminary medical exam indicated Hansen suffered from retinal hemorrhages and cerebral hemorrhaging, according to the affidavit. Medical personnel determined Hansen's death was the result of child abuse, the affidavit states.

The Cook County medical examiner's office did not immediately schedule Hansen for an autopsy Thursday because he is an organ donor. Once his organs are harvested at the hospital, his body will be examined.

When officials arrived at the boy's residence Tuesday, Hansen was lying on the floor struggling to breathe. He was taken to The Community Hospital in Munster and then airlifted to Comer Children's Hospital.

Golub was baby-sitting Hansen and an 8-month-old infant when the incident happened. Golub told officials he didn't call 911 after Hansen struck the entertainment center because he was scared, the affidavit states.

A neighbor saw Golub carrying Hansen and screaming in the parking lot of his apartment complex. Golub met his mother in the parking lot and told her the toddler had fallen. When the neighbor heard the toddler wasn't breathing, she called 911.

The Indiana Department of Child Services also is looking into the death.

One World One Heart

One World One Heart is a worldwide event for bloggers only.It is the brainchild of Lisa Swifka . It gives all those who blog a chance to meet and mingle and form connections with those they may not have otherwise met from all over the world. In the past 4 years this event has grown to over 1,000 participants with lasting friendships (and even one love connection) formed along the way.  Think of it as a GIGANTIC open house allowing you to travel without ever leaving your home........going from blog to blog(in various countries) seeing the wonder each one has created and meeting all the fabulous people behind those blogs. As a bonus each blogger participant will offer up a "door prize or prizes"....just for dropping by, saying hello and seeing their world.  It's really that easy.

I an  very late in joining the party. I got a new computer in late December to replace my broken one. My old computer had digital media ports so that I could just pop in my camera card and get my photos. My new computer does NOT have this function and uploading pics is now a project (especially since I misplaced  my camera cord.) This is my first time joining the festivities.

I am Silvia a fulltime mammographer who lives 30 miles south of Chicago with my husband, two teenage sons and 3 feline furbabies.
I enjoy creating home decor items

I enjoy paper crafting.
I also enjoy gardening and photography
My "door prize" is this 6x6 altered canvas that I created
Thanks for stopping by and I hope that you'll visit again  :)
